ADVOCATING FOR YOUR RIGHT TO LIVE WITHOUT VIOLENCE
Safe Shelter Program
This program provides: 1) immediate, safe shelter for women and children fleeing a violent relationship; 2) advocacy, emotional support, and referrals as she makes choices about her options; 3) community education around domestic violence and violence against women.
In a crisis, women can access the program via the RCMP or 911. For information, support, or planning, women can access the program by contacting either office.
Stopping The Violence (STV) Counselling and STV Outreach
Stopping The Violence (STV) Outreach can provide a woman with information, emotional support and advocacy as she takes the next steps to live independently from a violent relationship. One-on-one support is available for assistance with forms and government processes, safety planning, locating housing, and access to legal and medical supports.
Stopping The Violence (STV) Counselling uses a women-centered model of counselling to support women that have experienced violence or abuse at any stage of their lifetime. This program helps to address issues arising from victimization, such as depression, lack of self worth, or health problems.
Children and Youth Exposed to Domestic Violence
This program addresses the exposure to negative family contact in the home, as it can have a profound impact on the development of children and youth.
Children often differ in the responses to violence. It is common for them to exhibit negative behaviors, such as aggression, eating difficulties, nightmares, fears and anxiety, depression, or learning difficulties.
Counselling is available for children and youth between ages 3 to 18 who have exposed to domestic violence. The program offers individual and group counselling for children and youth, as well as for their parent or caregivers.
We can help children and youth to: ۰ identify and express emotions in healthy ways ۰ understand that they are not responsible for the violence ۰ develop safety plans ۰ assist with grief, loss and separation issues ۰ teach problem-solving and coping skills ۰ enhance self-awareness and self-worth
